VIDS: Valley Infant Development Service
Early Intervention Program

VIDS helps infants and toddlers from birth to three years of age who have or are at risk of developmental delays.

VIDS team members provide guidance and support to fit in with each family’s everyday routines and activities, in places that are most convenient for the family. All services are provided in the family's primary language.

The VIDS staff consists of social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, developmental specialists, speech/language pathologists, and nurses. A VIDS team will assess each child’s abilities and will develop an individualized plan to promote the development of play, movement, social, communication, eating, and self-care skills. For example, VIDS staff may teach parents and caregivers special exercises for the child, or help parents learn how to effectively advocate for their child’s medical or social needs.

VIDS started in 1978 as the first early intervention program to help families in the Greater Springfield community. Today, VIDS serves 350 families each year in Springfield, East Longmeadow, Longmeadow, Hampden and Wilbraham. Pediatricians most often make referrals, but anyone can refer a child with the permission of the parents. Developmental screening and evaluations are available to any family concerned about their infant or toddler's development.

When a toddler leaves the VIDS program, Child & Family’s Disability Resource program Child & Family’s Disability Resource is available to offer parents resources and support for raising a child with a disability. The adaptive sports and activities program offers year-round recreational, educational and competitive opportunities for children, teens, and adults with physical disabilities. Adaptive sporting equipment is available for loan for a nominal fee. Program staff provides information and referrals for any questions pertaining to physical disabilities. Our goal is to offer a continuum of services that will support and empower people with disabilities as active members of their communities.
